Real games, well tested

Every puzzle comes from a real game on lichess.org, from its open puzzle database. We keep only the well-tested ones: played at least a hundred times, with a settled rating and good votes from the players who solved them. Every puzzle links to its game, so you can see how it really went.

Chess puzzles at your level

Your puzzle rating starts from your rating in your games, and moves with every puzzle the way lichess.org rates its own (Glicko-2). Your puzzles come from a little below it: hard enough to make you think, easy enough to keep you going. You never see the same puzzle twice.

By theme and opening

Every puzzle is tagged with its themes, from forks, pins and skewers to back-rank mates, deflections and rook endgames, and with the opening it came from. Your rating follows each of them too: what you do well, and what we'll work on together.

Puzzles in your plan

Your weekly training plan asks for a few puzzles every day. Ready for something harder? Ghost puzzles are the same puzzles with the board a few moves behind.

Everything each plan has: the plans.

Where do the puzzles come from?

From lichess.org's puzzle database, which lichess.org gives away for anyone to use: positions from real games with one clear best move, each played at least a hundred times before it reaches you.

How is my puzzle rating worked out?

Like a game rating: solving a puzzle rated above you gains more, missing one rated below you costs more. It starts from your rating on Chess.com or Lichess.org, or 1500 without a linked account, and shows a "?" until it has settled.

What counts as solving?

Your first try: the puzzle's move, or any move that mates. Find it after a wrong move and you've still got it, but the rating goes by the first try.
