Luny: play a human-like chess AI at your level

Luny plays the moves people at your level play, not the cold, perfect moves of an engine. Practise an opening until it's yours, choose how Luny plays, or play on from a position of your own games.

In your games, the style and trades give Luny a gentle lean. Here, Luny answers from the opening's known lines.

A human-like chess AI, built on Maia

Luny runs Maia3, an open-source chess engine from the CSSLab research group at the University of Toronto, made to play like a person. It learned from human games to predict the move a player of a given rating would make, so Luny plays the moves, the plans and the mistakes of players at your level. It runs unmodified, and its source is on our licenses page.

At your level

Luny has a rating of its own for you: your Luny rating starts from your rating in your games and moves with every game you finish. Luny plays to it. That makes games against Luny feel like games against people, not a wall that never blunders. The rating guides how Luny plays; it isn't a promise of strength.

Practise any opening

Pick the opening for your next game, from the Italian Game to the Caro-Kann, or search for any named line, and Luny plays it with you. Leave the line and Luny takes over with its own moves, just as an opponent at the club would.

Its style, your choice

Attacking, balanced or solid; trading pieces, balanced or keeping them on. It's a gentle lean: Luny still plays its own human moves, a bit more often the kind you asked for.

Play on from your own games

Your training plan sets up positions from your own games: a win that slipped away to finish, a tough position to save. Luny has the whole game behind it, and plays on from there.

Every game, analysed

Games are saved as you play, so you can come back to them. Once a game is over, open it on the analysis board with Stockfish, and ask the coach about it.

Everything each plan has: the plans.

How strong is Luny?

About as strong as players of your rating, with the kinds of mistakes they make: that's what Maia was made for. It isn't a fixed strength, so some games will be easier and some harder.

Is Luny an engine like Stockfish?

No. Stockfish looks for the best move; Maia, and so Luny, looks for the move a person would play. Stockfish still analyses your games afterwards.

Do games against Luny count for my rating?

For your Luny rating, yes; it's separate from your Chess.com and Lichess.org ratings. Games from a position of your own games, in your training plan, aren't rated.
